Phil Newall
Mining Industry Expert
UK
With a first degree in Mining Geology and a PhD in Exploration Geochemistry, coupled with over 40 years’ experience as a consultant, Phil has an excellent understanding of the modern mining industry. He began his career as an exploration geologist with the Robertson Group, working extensively on gold and base metal projects in North Africa, before moving on to pursue a PhD in exploration geochemistry based on the Redmoor tin-tungsten deposit in southwest England. This was followed by a period as lecturer at CSM specialising in mineral deposit geology, exploration practice and resource evaluation, primarily taught at Masters level. In conjunction with this, Phil was also instrumental in establishing the precursor to Wardell Armstrong International as a consulting geologist with CSM Associates as it was then known. Following this, Phil moved on to Senior Consulting Geologist, then Technical Director, Director of Minerals, and finally, Managing Director with Wardell Armstrong International (formerly CSMA Consultants Ltd). Phil retired from the Partnership in 2023 and now is a NED with Blue Gold International and a Technical Advisor for AltynGold and EBRD.
Professionally, Phil has provided a broad range of consultancy services to minerals companies throughout the world, with emphasis in Central Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and Europe. He has developed an extensive portfolio of exploration and mining-related contracts, from project management through to technical audits of a large variety of metalliferous and industrial mineral deposits, although particular specialisation lies in gold and base metals.
Phil brings a wealth of experience from across the industry and has been involved in some important IPO’s such as Glencore, Nordgold, IRC and London Mining. In addition, he has been instrumental in managing some major Feasibility studies, is very familiar with NI 43-101, JORC/CIM resource reporting, as well as undertaking numerous due diligence, fatal flaw and scoping studies.
Phil also continues to be involved in Expert Witness work, through international arbitration, in cases around the world with specialisation in resource/reserve reporting, valuation and project development.
